FREESTYLE ASSIGNMENT BLOG

Through this blog, I will write about the Sony DAV-DZ830W - DVD 5.1 Home Cinema 1200W System which Is a piece of technology that emphasizing nothing but fine quality and ease of usability.

Sony DAV-DZ830W - DVD 5.1 Home theater 1200W System

QUALITY, QUALITY, QUALITY! This is the reason why I am really into my Sony cinema system with a powerfully 1200W of pure bass and crisp sound quality. I brought this Sony system first hand for £350 (RRP £ 500) off the website called, www.amazon.co.uk on 19th December 2007. I initially had a 340W 5.1 Sony system in 2005 which I bought for £150. Figs. 1 show the theatre system in the lounge area of my house (Please click on all images for full size).

I have a great passion for excellence in quality technology and music, that’s why I consume Sony products and from experience of consuming products from this brand, the quality and usability of it are very much pleasing. The word cool can be speculated on many different things, from culture to sophistication to simplicity to behaviour to wealth/power to style. In terms of sophistication, style and class of this technology, my Sony System is most definitely cool and something I know allot of people would want. So, let’s look more into this piece of technology.

It is no doubt that had to say in designing the Sony DZ830 the adaptive capacity is amazing. The DZ830 uses four circular columns on foot and aesthetics certainly fine but still somewhat discreet. Underlying this system is a 5.1; the four columns are complemented by a centre speaker to the line of wasp and a subwoofer. It distinguishes itself from its competitors by the possibility of using or not a wireless link (infrared) for the rear speakers. All equipment is provided for wireless networking, amplification being integrated into one of the speakers. All the fours standing speakers have adjustable heights, with the rear characterized by convenience without wires.

It was straightforward to put together. Setting up the whole home theatre system took around 30 Mins with 3 of us. But it did take a while as there were so many screws and 2 rather large instructions manuals.
It also takes a while and the auto calibration was superb but of course did change it manually according to room layout. I had to change a few settings to sync the sound to the picture but this was also easy and covered in the manual. You can also swap the LH & RH surround speakers by changing a setting (as I did) to move the powered speaker nearer a wall socket and send the wireless signal along the side of the room where there is less chance of interruption. But I just left it next to the TV but will soon mount it on the wall. The Bravia theatre has an automatic calibration microphone system and auto levels each speaker volume output depending on where you put the sync sensor device.

When I brought the product I though the rear speakers were wireless stand alones as stated in the product description. However the two rears are linked together via a wire and a mains adaptor. There is a small IR monitor that senses one of the rear speakers with the sensor on it and as a result plays sound through the other wired linked speaker. From experience it is advised to mount the remote IR monitor somewhere high to avoid people to interrupt the IR connection. But the Infrared transmission to the rear is is very robust, innovative and does transmit at sharp angles. They have a 15m cable so they can be moved around to quite a range.

The home theatre system has four satellite speakers, each being 143W. I fell in love with the S-master digital amplifier which gave me a massive 285 W on the sub alone. The total RMS output power gives you a massive 1200W pure sound bliss and boy its proven itself justice 100’s times ever since I bough it.

One of the biggest differences is the sound experience. When you go to see a movie in a quality movie theatre, you'll hear the music, sound effects and dialogue not just from the screen, but all around you. This 5.1 is them same experience and this is what makes it unique to another music system. In this surround sound system, you hear different parts of the soundtrack coming from different places. When somebody on the left side of the screen says something, you hear it more from the left speaker. And in a movie like "Star Wars," you hear a rumbling swoosh travel from the front of the theatre to the rear as a spaceship flies toward the camera and off the screen. You are more involved in the experience of watching a film because the world of the movie is all around you. This is what I and many other people think.

The standing speakers are very practical, in the height and are a real eye catcher. I had my first though on the sub woofer after it did its calibration and it had virtually no deep bass but it was just a matter of adjustment and position manually and the bass was just phenomenal. The picture and sound is a beautifully, really a winner. The interface has a physical and graphical user interface. Aesthetically it is great and also usable. As usual it was something I had to get used to using certain functions. For high tech users like me it was something I easily adapted to. But for people who are confident with technology it will be somewhat hard to actually put together and setup the system.

The sound output is again unbelievable and completely transforms the viewing experience of watching anything. The DVD had a HDMI socket which was sold separately. I brought this of the Internet and they are costly so just a small cable but of course it’s about shopping around online. Having HDMI, it up-scales the picture from DVD quality to HD quality and there is certainly and enhancement as watching it on a large TV screen is just amazing.

This is what I would consider as some highlights of the Sony Surround sound system.

  • 4 x floor standing ejected tall speakers
  • S-DIAT wireless rear speakers
  • S-master digital amplifier, a big 1200W of pure power and bass
  • HDMI output (upscale to 720p/1080i) great output if the TV is of quality.
  • Digital media port - connect your network Walkman, iPod, mobile phone, PC to your DAV. I played games form my laptop to the TV and speakers and the game play experience is just great.
  • RDS tuner FM20 / AM10 presets, so you can find all those channels at crisp sound quality.
  • PAL progressive scan
  • Movie / music mode - optimized for CD playback and DVD playback
  • Portable audio enhancer - enhance the sound from portable audio devices by connecting them to the DAV; u used my Sony NWZ-A818BLK 8GB Walkman for this.
  • Auto calibration (DCAC) - optimizing the surround effect in the room and I can manually change it.
  • A/V sync - for perfect sound and image synchronization with flat panel TV
  • Multi speaker formation
  • MP3, JPEG, DivX etc playback
  • Quality surround sound and image/video playback.

For me this is what makes this creative piece of technology interesting and cool and this shows my perception into this type of sophisticated technology.

Studio 2 - Applying Quantitative Usability Methods

The aim of this studio is to design a usability evaluation on a Samsung E840 (FIG 1). The purpose of this evaluation will be to measure the Efficiency of Visibility.

FIG 1 – Samsung E840

The plan below shows the scope for the design of the usability evaluation.

Device

SAMSUNG E840 (FIG 1)

Attribute -

Measuring the Efficiency of Visibility

Metrics -

Efficiency measures

Heuristic -

Visibility of system

Efficiency Measures (metrics)

Listed below, shows the three efficiency metrics that will be measured against in each task when carrying out the test. This is what we are going to measure.

  1. Time to complete a task
  2. Time spent on correcting errors
  3. Relative efficiency compared with an expert user

Heuristic – Visibility

The heuristic that we will use is measuring the Visibility of system. How the user interacts with the phone in the quickest/appropriate way.

Tasks

The usability is measured relative to the users' performance on a given set of test tasks. Listed below, shows the three specific tasks that are focused on the attribute measurement.

  1. Task 1 – Find the Games section on the phone

  1. Task 2 – Take a photo of you hand using the phones camera

  1. Task 3 – Set the alarm on the phone to 6pm

Now that the usability evaluation had been designed we will now look at the Best Case and Worst Case level. An expert user will be used to do the best case test and a novice user will be used to carry out the test in the worst case. These results will be compared with the other users to differentiate the comparisons.

Best Case (expert user)

Below shows the results:

Task 1 – Find the Games section on the phone

Time -

10 sec

Errors -

0

Task 2 – Take a photo of you hand using the phones camera

Time -

9 sec

Errors -

0

Task 3 – Set the alarm on the phone to 6pm

Time -

15.5 sec

Errors -

0

Worst Case (novice user)

Below shows the results:

Task 1 – Find the Games section on the phone

Time -

22.5 sec

Errors -

1 – Pressing the back button to go out of a submenu

Task 2 – Take a photo of you hand using the phones camera

Time -

13 sec

Errors -

1 – Pressing the back button to go out of a submenu

Task 3 – Set the alarm on the phone to 6pm

Time -

1 min 10 sec

Errors -

6 - Pressing the back button to go out of a submenu (x5)

- Inputting the wrong time(x1)

Now that we have these results, they will be compared with the other users to differentiate the comparisons. There will be 3 who will carry out the usability test. The test will be done individually through each task and their actions will be record and measured against the usability design. A designed test form will be used to record what happens in the test. The usability test forms and given instruction to the users as show below.

User Instructions

“Hi. We have a usability test that will be tested on a Samsung E840. We will give you three specific task and you use this mobile device to carry the test on. We will be doing a live analysis on this test Are you ready? Ok.

  1. Find the Games section on the phone

The task is to:

  1. Take a photo of you hand using the phones camera

And the final task is to:

  1. Set the alarm on the phone to 6pm

Ok that’s the end of the test. Thank you for you time and support.”
